A One Of A Kind Experience

Attending Toronto’s One of a Kind Show and Sale is something that I’ve had earmarked for quite some time but never got around to doing until this year.  Celebrating its 41st year, this event has become the flagship destination for Canadian handmade, showcasing hundreds of artisans and their wares.  Over the course of eleven days hundreds of artisans and designers display their handcrafted goods in a variety of categories which includes: home décor, fashion, jewelry, visual art, toys and of course food.

Albacore loin Brisket

As part of the kick-off to this year’s holiday show I had the opportunity to enjoy an incredible breakfast prepared by local ambassador, Chef Cory Vitiello (chef and owner of The Harbord Room, THR & Co., and Flock).  The morning meal consisted of:  crispy fingerling potatoes, beet and apple horseradish, smoked Albacore loin; Spanish frittata layered with herbed crêpes, piquillo peppers and Romesco hollandaise; smoked brisket and salsa verde with crispy onions, cured egg yolk and grilled sourdough; brioche & dried wild blueberry bread pudding with lemon crème fraiche; fried green tomatoes with soft scrambled eggs and old white cheddar.  The sensational morning spread was accompanied by bright and energizing cold-pressed juices from Greenhouse Juice Co., whose co-founder Hana James is also a local ambassador for the show.

Fueled by this incredible fare I made my way through colorful aisles featuring incredibly unique finds like stunning silk scarves; inventive art using recycled and repurposed materials; multicolored canvases; seriously cute sock monkeys; sparkling gems; and last but not least a myriad of gastronomic delights.

Sauces Peanut butter

Some of my delicious discoveries included: mouthwatering almond cake from Big Boat Bakery; gourmet chocolate caramel apples from Bruce County Nut & Fudge Co.; decadent dessert sauces from Esther Gould’s Finest; creamy nougat from La Nougaterie Quebec; incredible decorated cookie creations from Mad Batter Bakers; gourmet peanut butter from Monkey Butter; homemade pies for one from Shut Ur Pie Hole (who also had a fun photo op at their booth); award-winning all natural candy from Sweet Truth Candy Co.; savory jellies from Tangled Garden; healthy and fun loose leaf teas from tealish fine teas; flavorful roasted soy beans from The Bean Ladies; and earthy smoked spices from Smoke Fine Foods.

Not only will I be stocking the pantry with my fantastic finds, but also the stockings of several of the people on my Christmas list.  The One of a Kind Show and Sale truly accomplishes its mission to deliver an inspired shopping experience and I will certainly be a repeat customer. Buon Appetito!
