There’s an old remedy that recommends starving a cold and feeding a fever. For soccer fever however, especially leading up to World Cup, it’s probably best to stuff it, which is exactly what a number of fine food purveyors did at the Calco, Cibo, Chiacchiere event held recently at the Madison Event Centre. The soccer themed evening, hosted in collaboration with J. Cipelli Wines & Spirits Inc., was a wonderful pairing of food, wine and good cheer with a portion of its proceeds being donated to The Alzheimer’s Society (Woodbridge) and Veneto Educational & Cultural Centre.
This evening of soccer and fine fare was definitely worth talking about with delectable offerings from Italian eateries, fine food importers and distributors, complimented by a selection of Zenato Wines (one of which, the Amarone della Valpolicella, recently cited as a favorite of actor George Clooney).
Guests were welcomed into a room adorned with soccer paraphernalia by hosts dressed as referees and invited to enjoy the bounty from a number of culinary stations. Some of the evening’s highlights included: classic homemade focaccia sandwiches from Cucina Diamante Catering; seafood risotto adorned with seppioline (cuttlefish) from Culinary Studio; a savory array of tapenades, olives and preserves from Jesse Tree Importing; earthy orecchiette with sausage and rapini from Posticino Ristorante; succulent and spicy porchetta sandwiches from Vincentina Fine Foods; exotic wild boar salami from Salumi Paganelli; and an exquisite selection of cheeses from Totera Fine Foods. The wines that scored goals with my palette, the sparkling and crisp Bardolino Chiaretto Rose, and the one which now gives me something in common with the adored Mr. Clooney, the Amarone della Valpolicella. To cap off the night, cool confections from Sicilian Ice Cream and espresso Ruffino from Classic Gourmet Coffee.
Food, wine, friends and conversation about calcio, truly a wonderful way to spend an evening. Buon Appetito!
