Be Our Guest – Disney World Dining

Be our guest! Be our guest!

Put our service to the test

Tie your napkin round your neck, cherie

And we’ll provide the rest……

And a dinner here is never second best

To paraphrase the signature Disney song, a dinner, breakfast, lunch, and snack here are never second best.  After spending 6 days dining around Disneyworld, there’s no need for me to ask the dishes about the quality of food and the level of service in the most magical place on earth.

I was joined by six other people on this vacation which meant the opportunity to sample not only a multitude of Mickey-shaped foods but other fun and fantastic fare as well. The following is a summary of what we savoured over the course of six days, broken down by location.

Day 1 – Disney Springs

Disney Springs is a beautiful outdoor retail haven featuring shops, entertainment, and restaurants.  It is here where we began our week of Disney Eats.  The first taste on the trip was one we planned for, 60 days in advance of our departure, with a reservation at Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ and once we arrived, we understood why.  This is the farm to fork eatery of celebrity chef, Art Smith (best known as chef to Oprah Winfrey). The southern comfort food and hospitality we received was exceptional. Our server was charming and knowledgeable, sharing so many wonderful insights with us from the concept for the restaurant to the operation of the line in the kitchen and of course offering us recommendations on the mouthwatering menu offerings.  While everything on the bill of fare sounded exceptional, we decided on:

  • Bunch of Puppies – House-made hushpuppies (corn batter fritters) served with pimento cheese and red jalapeño jelly.
  • The Art Burger – Two beef patties topped with American cheese, Art’s special sauce, tomato-bacon jam, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles on a brioche bun. Served with house-made barbecue chips drizzled with icebox dressing.
  • Art’s Hot Chicken Sandwich – Crispy-fried chicken breast tossed in our buffalo-style hot sauce and dressed with tangy slaw, bread and butter pickles and a drizzle of icebox dressing. Served with house-made barbecue chips drizzled with icebox dressing.
  • Chopped Pork Barbecue – Lean pork is cooked low and slow then dressed with our sweet and spicy barbecue sauce. Served with Momma’s mac and cheese, Southern Slaw and a cheddar drop biscuit.
  • Fried Chicken and Doughnuts – Two pieces of Chef Art Smith’s famous fried chicken served with Everglazed’s hand-crafted glazed donuts and creamy mashed potatoes.

Of note here the hushpuppies and chicken and doughnuts are among the most popular signature dishes on the menu and we can attest to why.

Rather than order dessert at the restaurant (which was very tempting) we opted for indulgence elsewhere paying a visit to Everglazed Donuts.  While each and every one of their confections appealed to our sweet tooth, we decided on the Nutella Boston Cream Donut, Apple Strudel Donut, Cookies and Cream Donut and Chocolate Glazed with Sprinkles

Day 2 – Epcot

Before setting out on the Skyrail to travel the world at Epcot we began the day with Mickey Waffles at the Pop Century Resort Food Hall, these would be the first of many mouse shaped breakfasts we enjoyed.

The world is literally your oyster at the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT) with 11 different countries represented. The authenticity of each pavilion was amazing, right down to the cast members hailing from each of the nations featured (I can’t even begin to tell you how much I enjoyed speaking Italian in their stunning recreation of Italy).  The international flavours we feasted on were as follows:

Les Halles Boulangerie – France

  • Pain Lard Fromage – Bacon and Cheese Sourdough Roll
  • Baguette
  • Croissant
  • Brie au Pommes – Brie, Apples and Cranberries in Multi Grain Bread

Enoteca Castello and Gelateria Toscana – Italy

  • Limoncello Cherry Spritz
  • Zeppole and Mickey Espresso Gelato Affogato

Goshiki – Japan

  • Wagyu Bun – Steamed Bun filled with American Wagyu Beef served with Green Shiso Sauce
  • Sushi donut – Donut-shaped Sushi featuring Salmon, Tuna, Shrimp, Cucumber and Sesame Seeds over a decorated plate of Wasabi Aïoli, Sriracha Aïoli and Eel Sauce

China Booth – China

  • Pan fried chicken dumplings and lychee iced tea

Kingrla Bakeri Og – Norway

  • Mickey Cinnamon Roll
  • School bread – Sweet Roll filled with Custard and dipped in Coconut

Craftsman’s Courtyard -World Showcase Promenade

  • Grilled Pork Belly with Salsa Verde, Rapini, Pickled Peppers and Raclette Cheese on Sourdough

 Gourmet Landscapes – Canada

  • Roasted Bone Marrow with Onion Marmalade, Pickled Mushrooms, Mache Lettuce and Bone Marrow Snow

Day 3 – Hollywood Studios

Disney’s Hollywood Studios rolled out the red carpet on refreshments as we began our day with another round of Mickey Shaped Waffles (blueberry this time) paired with a Mimosa at Hollywood Scoops. The character cravings continued to be satisfied with the Mickey Pretzel from Anaheim Produce.

Our midday meal at Woody’s Lunchbox had us all feeling like kids again as we enjoyed the offerings in the oversized playland from one of our favourite Disney films.  The Totchos (Potato Barrels coated with Beef and Bean Chili, Shredded Cheese and signature Queso with Tomatoes and Corn Chips finished with Sour Cream and a sprinkle of Green Onions), Grilled Cheese, BBQ Brisket Melt and Hot Chocolate Lunch Box Tart and Raspberry Lunch Box Tart, took our taste buds to infinity and beyond.

Later, in a galaxy far, far away, we enjoyed an intergalactic snack of Outpost Mix from Kat Saka’s Kettle which A colorful blend of sweet and spicy flavors in a combination of popcorn tossed in a red chili lime glaze coating and popcorn tossed in blueberry lemon pound cake glaze. This was followed up a short time later with a stellar savoury Ronto Wrap (roasted pork, grilled pork sausage, peppercorn sauce and tangy slaw wrapped in a pita) from Batuu’s Black Spire Outpost.

We concluded the day with cosmic cocktails at Oga’s Cantina: The Outer Rim, Bloody Rancor and Jedi Mindtrick which were accompanied by a Happabore Sampler (Cured and roasted meats, pork crackling and cheese).  By the way, the grey stuff on the board was in fact delicious.

Day 4 -Magic Kingdom

Fairytale fare characterized our day in the park that lives up to its name.  Our first and most sought-after bite of the day were the Cheeseburger Spring Rolls from the Spring Roll Cart.  Curious confections followed from Big Top Treats and the Cat Tail from the Chesire Cafe.

We were treated like kings and queens and enjoyed the company of princesses, as we dined like royalty at Cinderella’s Royal Table. Our majestic menu consisted of:

  • Squash Soup
  • Castle Salad -Romaine, Brussels Sprouts, Goat Cheese, Seasonal Vegetables, and Green Goddess Dressing
  • Braised Beef – Carrot and Coriander Purée, Shallot Jam, and Horseradish Gremolade
  • Chilled Jumbo Shrimp -Avocado Mousse, Crispy Peppers, Corn Purée, and Micro Cilantro
  • Roasted Lamb Chops -Warm Winter Squash Salad, Pomegranate, Pistachios and Honey Balsamic Reduction
  • Grilled Filet Mignon – Potato Pavé, Roasted Seasonal Vegetables, and House-made Steak Sauce
  • Marinated Grilled Chicken – Wild Mushroom and Parmesan Risotto, Roasted Fennel, and Black Truffle Butter
  • Jaq & Gus – Cheesecake with Seasonal Flavors and Garnishes
  • The Clock Strikes Twelve – Dark Chocolate Mousse with a Caramel and Crunchy Praline Center, served with Chocolate Sauce and Hazelnut Gelato
  • Coffee Pot de Crème -Coffee-infused vegan Coconut Custard, Passion Fruit Gelée, and Crumbled Chocolate-Espresso Beans

Day 5 – Disney’s Riviera Resort

While this was not a park day, it was still a day dedicated to Disney Friends as we enjoyed breakfast at Topolino’s Terrace, the top tier restaurant at the Riviera Resort.   We were joined by Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Daisy as we enjoyed a breakfast experience that guaranteed our good morning.

To start we all shared an assortment of freshly baked breakfast pastries (muffins, croissants, and apple crumb cake) followed by:

  • Quiche Gruyère -House-made Pancetta, Roasted Potatoes, Gruyère, Field Greens, Lemon Vinaigrette
  • Avocado Toast – Prosciutto, Poached Egg, Toy Box Tomatoes, Fennel, Harissa Vinaigrette, Ciabatta
  • Sour Cream Waffle – Roasted Apples, Chantilly, Orange-Maple Syrup, and served with smoked Bacon
  • Wood-fired Steak and Eggs – Polenta, Pomodoraccio Tomatoes, Roasted Potatoes, Wild Mushroom Conserva and eggs (any style)
  • Mickey shaped waffle dippers (which I particularly loved served up on artist’s palette with dipping sauces).

Day 6 – Animal Kingdom

Our food experience here was wild.  We enjoyed a few exotic eats between river boat rides and safari adventures which consisted of:

  • Chicken dumplings and seasoned fries from Mr. Kamal’s
  • Cheeseburger Steamed Pods – (Bao Buns stuffed with Ground Beef, Ketchup, Mustard, Pickle, and Cheddar Cheese served with Crunchy Vegetable Slaw and Vegetable Chips) from Satu’li Canteen
  • Buffalo Chicken Chips (House-made Chips served with Buffalo Chicken and Blue Cheese Dressing topped with Tomato and Celery Relish) from Trilo Bites

And for the sweet finish, Krispy Smores Treat and chocolate covered marshmallow from Zuri’s Sweets Shop and a Mickey Ice-Cream Sandwich.

After nearly a week of being nourished by the famed resort I can conclude that we enjoyed four parks full of flavor and look forward to more servings real soo.  Buon Appetito!
